Almost every argument about NordVPN alternatives is really an argument about $278.16.

That is what a two-year NordVPN plan costs when it renews, against $83.43 for the same two years the first time. The service is identical on both sides of that date. If you are reading this because the second invoice was larger than you expected, you are not comparing VPNs on features — you are asking which providers do not do this, and the honest answer is a short list.

Proton VPN partly does — the one-year renewal is $79.95 against a $59.88 intro, a rise of a third rather than a doubling, and its ownership answers a different question entirely.

The trap in most “NordVPN alternatives” lists

Search for this phrase and Surfshark will be near the top of nearly every result. Surfshark is a good product. It is also owned by Nord Security, which has owned it since February 2022, along with NordPass, NordLocker and Incogni.

That fact is not hidden, but it is never in the recommendation. If you are switching for price, moving to Surfshark works. What you give up by leaving

This is the part the lists skip. NordVPN has the largest network here, roughly 7,400 servers across 126 countries. It has four Deloitte no-logs audits, more than any pick below. Tor over VPN, Meshnet and a wide dedicated-IP selection have no equivalent at Mullvad or IVPN. In China its obfuscated servers are inconsistent but present, and only Astrill has a materially better reputation there.

If those are the features you use, the alternatives are a downgrade dressed as a principle. If, like most people, you use a VPN to move your apparent location and keep your ISP out of your browsing, you are paying a premium for capacity you never touch.

Where each alternative actually wins

Proton VPN wins on structure. The controlling stake sits with a Swiss non-profit foundation, which is a different kind of promise from a private company’s marketing — it changes who the organisation ultimately answers to. Add open-source, published audits, port forwarding and a free tier and it is the least compromised swap for most NordVPN customers.

Mullvad wins on discipline. No email, no account name, cash accepted, one price. Its refusal to chase streaming is not a gap it failed to fill; it is a decision about what the product is for.

Do this before you cancel

Check the renewal date, disable auto-renew, buy a single month of the replacement, and run both for a week. Almost every switching regret we hear about comes from cancelling first and discovering afterwards that the new provider does not work with a work network, a bank, or a router. A week of overlap costs a few dollars and removes the risk entirely.
